Summer Camp for Children with Diabetes Camp Independence is a four week summer camp program for children with diabetes. The camp is situated on the lush Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds located in Staten Island's greenbelt. Children experience a full day of recreational activities including daily swimming, sports, arts and crafts, music, boating, karate, cheerleading, pioneering, special event days and more. The program also includes weekly trips to places like Kearns Amusement Park and Fun Time America. Besides the wonderful activities at the camp, the children receive special training and information regarding diabetes and are encouraged to share their concerns with staff and their fellow campers. Camp Independence employs a dedicated staff which receives special training in diabetes care. In addition to the camp's full time nurse, a nurse with a strong background in diabetic care works exclusively at Camp Independence as a staff member. This nurse travels with the children throughout the camp day.
