ESL Civics Department

ESL stands for English as a Second Language. This program is designed to help immigrants in the community learn and improve their English language skills. Regardless of the language you speak, we can teach you English.

There are classes for the beginner as well as the person looking for accent reduction. This is an intensive course given two or three times a week in 10 week cycles. Students are assessed and put into appropriate classes according to level. The focus is to facilitate conversational English, reading and writing in order for students to find employment or, in many cases, to assist in gaining promotions in their current jobs. Citizenship preparation classes are also available.

Every class has a computer component. Students will have use of computers to create resumés and cover letters and will have access to the Internet for job searches. Classes are held on the North and South Shore JCCs as well as other convenient locations on Staten Island.

In addition, we have been providing ESL classes on site at over 15 elementary schools on Staten Island, teaching parents English so that they become more active participants in their children’s education.
