Honorees

Gail Castellano, Senior Vice President and Regional Executive of Richmond County Savings Bank a division of New York Community Bank has achieved a great level of success through hard work, determination and the desire to continually provide outstanding service to her customers while giving back to the community. Highly motivated and results oriented, Gail has distinguished herself as a leader in the Retail Banking Industry. She began her banking career 25 years ago at an entry level position. It was through diligence and dedication, that Gail has risen through the ranks to become a Senior Vice President and Regional Executive overseeing 20 branches, 200 employees and deposits over 1.9 billion, which have grown significantly under her tutelage.

As a leader in the community Gail has selflessly donated her time and efforts to many meaningful causes. She is a past Board President for the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island and currently serves on its Executive Board. She is a Board member for the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, the St George Theatre, and the South Shore Business Improvement District.  Gail is a member of the Advisory Committee for SCORE, a Cabinet member for the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation and a co-chair of the Lucille & Jay Sunrise Day Camp Advisory Committee. Gail also co-chairs the Sunrise Walk campaign where funds raised are used to send children with cancer and their siblings to the day camp free of charge. Since the inception of the walk in 2016, Gail has raised over $70,000.00 through a bank branch campaign which she independently developed.

Gail received numerous awards over the span of her career. The most recent are the following: In 2016 Gail was the recipient of the prestigious SIEDC’s Executive Woman of the Year award and in June 2017 Gail was an honoree at the Eger Foundation’s annual Golf and Bocce Classic.  In September of 2017, Gail was named one of the 25 most influential people who live or work on Staten Island by City & State Magazine and in April of 2018 she was named one of Staten Island’s 100 Most Powerful people by City & State, New York.

Gail enjoys spending time with her family. She has been married to her husband John Castellano, owner of Castellano’s House of Music for forty-one years and has 3 children and 2 grandchildren.  Nicole operates their family music stores, Richie is a member of the famous classic rock group, Blue Oyster Cult, and Lauren is Supervision Operations Chief of Staff at the Federal Reserve Bank of NY.

The apples of her eye are her two granddaughters Skylar and Ella.

Karen Aversa was born in Brooklyn, NY to Howard and Margaret Wedlake and moved to Staten Island in 1959. She attended P.S. 50, I.S. 7, New Dorp High School, and later attended the College of Staten Island. In 1972, Karen worked in the human resources department of EF Hutton.

Karen married Frank Aversa in 1973 and had three children, Frank Jr., Marissa, and Nicholas. In 1997, Karen began her career as a sales associate at the South Shore YMCA, where she retired in 2014. Struggling with the boredom of retirement, Karen returned to school in 2015 and received her New York State Real Estate Sales License.

Karen is presently a Managing Partner of Arden Services LLC, a residential, commercial, and industrial property inspection & reporting company located on Staten Island. Karen has also worked on several high profile political campaigns over the years.

As a grandparent of nine healthy children, Karen finds that supporting Sunrise Day Camp is a great way to express her thanks for her nine best gifts while helping less fortunate families on Staten Island.

“My favorite things are the times I spend with my family and working with a committee of fine colleagues, while helping the children and families that benefit from the accomplishments of Sunrise Day Camp,” said Karen.

Dr. Joan Graziano is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist in Staten Island, NY and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area.  Dr. Graziano was born in Brooklyn and moved to Staten Island at the age of 7 years old.  She completed St. Joseph by the Sea HS in a 3-year program completing her junior and senior courses simultaneously.  She went on to St. Joseph College in Brooklyn, and then to the State University of NY at Buffalo School of Medicine.

Dr. Graziano returned to Staten Island and commuted as chief resident and fellowship for Schneiders Children’s Hospital at LIJ.  Upon completion, Dr. Graziano worked at St. Vincents Medical Center – now named Richmond University Medical Center, where she remains the Chief of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.  Dr. Graziano maintains a private practice in pediatric hematology/oncology for outpatient visits and maintains inpatient, consult, ambulatory and clinic visits at RUMC.
