The Lucille and Jay Chazanoff Sunrise Day Camp, brings back the joys of childhood to  children with cancer and their siblings, provided completely free of charge. Being a day camp allows children who are in active treatment to continue with their home doctors and enjoy the comfort of sleeping in their own beds each night.  Recognizing the extraordinary financial demands that a child’s chronic illness can have on a family, Sunrise Day Camp and Year-Round Programs are always offered free of charge.

Children are referred from a network of affiliated hospitals located in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and New Jersey. Sunrise is operated by the JCC of Staten Island, in collaboration with Catholic Charities of Staten Island on the campus at Mount Loretto.

YOU can help give summer back to children with cancer!

Your involvement and interest in kids who are suffering from this dreaded disease and their families is so vitally important.  There are several ways that you can support the Sunrise kids. Please consider a Sponsorship through a gift from yourself or your business, a Journal Ad, or Tickets to the Sweet Sunrise Gala.

2018 Honorees

Camille Loccisano, was born in Brooklyn, NY to Anthony and Josephine Orrichio. Along with her siblings, Lucy and Anthony, she was raised in Bay Ridge.

A single parent, Ms. Loccisano raised 3 beautiful sons, Francesco, Nicholas and Christopher. In 2005, Ms. Loccisano’s oldest son, Francesco, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma followed by treatment-related leukemia. He was only 14 years old. He lost his life after two years.

During a ten year span, Ms. Loccisano partnered with her sister, Lucy, as they dedicated their time toward the 501(c)3 non-profit charitable foundation they established in her son’s name, The Francesco Loccisano Memorial Foundation, aka “Frankie’s Mission.” Along with a productive Board of Directors, an engaging ambassador team, countless volunteers and very strong support from generous sponsors, she met her vision and goals of assisting the pediatric cancer community.

Frankie’s Mission identified the dire need of extending financial help toward children and their families while they undergo childhood cancer treatments that are critical to their care and survival. They grew to extend significant financial help to approximately 600 families across the nation and became part of a coalition that steered a groundbreaking awareness movement promoting #GoGold. In addition, they drew a major light on the disparities of childhood cancer by funding impactful promotions, national public service announcements and a compelling documentary that won 4 Grammy awards. This led to the signing of major legislation, most specifically the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, a bipartisan bill diverting $126 million to the National Institute of Health.

Presently, Ms. Loccisano works for the New York City Department of Education as the parent coordinator for the Early Childhood Pre-K for All program in District 20. She remains dedicated to childhood cancer awareness and moves forward as a veteran supporter for the cause.

Nicole Ventura is a smart, caring, beautiful and extremely strong woman. The root of her selflessness is her love for dance. Nicole danced competitively at a young age, subsequently meeting her mentor Rachel Bascietto. Rachel always did her best to help her students that were experiencing financial hardships. She was also a strong proponent of giving back to the community and donating to St. Jude’s. Under Rachel’s guidance, Nicole became the choreographer and studio director that she is today.

Unfortunately, Rachel was diagnosed with lung cancer and she was taken from us way before her time. Since her passing, Nicole has continued to embody Rachel’s “give back” way of teaching dance. Upon opening The Dance House of Brooklyn, Nicole created the Rachel Bascietto Scholarship Award. This award is given to one student per year and allows them to attend the studio free of charge to help relieve financial burdens.

During her time as a studio director Nicole has continued to donate to foundations like St. Jude’s and has always found ways to give to those in need. In February of 2017, Nicole was diagnosed with stage four-colon cancer. During this long and hard battle with cancer Nicole’s strength did not waiver. She continued to run her studio while receiving treatment. Even more amazing than her ability to battle cancer while running a successful dance studio, her desire to help others became even stronger. In October of 2017, the Dance House of Brooklyn held their first Dancers Against Cancer benefit, the Dance House then became a “Hope Studio”. This organization provides help to dancers battling cancer. At this years recital, Nicole donated all proceeds made from the Dance House journals to a family close to her heart who recently lost their daughter to cancer. In the midst of Nicole’s hardest time, she found the strength and courage to give to others and spread hope to those who needed it most. Nicole continues to fight her battle with cancer and will continue to give back in any way she can. Her hope, strength, selflessness and determination does not waiver. She is truly an extraordinary woman.
