PRE-TEEN & TEEN PROGRAMS
In
response to the ever dwindling opportunities on Staten
Island for young musicians to play together in groups, the
Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute initiated an ensemble
program open to the entire community. You do not have to be
a JCC member or a Music Institute student to participate,
but you do need to have some experience on your instrument.
Auditions are required and are held at the Bernikow JCC by
appointment.
Private
Instruction for Children, Teens & Adults
Private lessons are given on a weekly basis from September
through June.
There are 30 lessons during the year, all
ages, all levels.
Lessons can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes long
and are available for the following instruments:

PARENT/CHILD CLASSES AT BERNIKOW JCC
The
Harmony
Road Music Program is a unique parent/child musical
experience that focuses on the development of the whole
child while stressing keyboard readiness. Each group course
is designed specifically for the age group, reinforcing and
building on their skills as they progress through the
curriculum. Parent or caregiver must actively accompany
child in classes. Book and CD included for all classes.
Free demonstration classes will be held in February.

Me
(ages 3-4 years)
45 minutes weekly - 15 weeks
Thursday - 4:00pm
A dynamic readiness program for young children with emphasis
on ear training, solfege singing, movement, pitch and rhythm
awareness, keyboard geography and finger readiness.
Creativity is stressed. Parent involvement in class and at
home.
Fee: $210M $250NM
Harmony
Road
(ages 4.5 - 6 years)
55 minutes weekly - 15 weeks
Carefully constructed for children to learn the basic
building blocks of music. Emphasis on ear training, solfege
singing, keyboard playing, ensemble and rhythm activities,
movement and musical creativity. Reading concepts are
presented gradually and basic composing activities encourage
the development of the child's musical vocabulary. This
exceptional course gives the student "inner hearing" which
makes transposing, improvisation and composing easily
accessible in their musical studies. Parent involvement in
class and at home.

The
Young Musician
(ages 6-7)
55 minutes weekly 15 weeks
The Young Musician introduces students to keyboard
performance and note reading in a holistic program,
Including the organized development of pitch, rhythm,
solfege singing, keyboards and movement activities. Parent
involvement in class and at home. Fee$250 Member/ $295
Non-Member

Music Together
of Staten Island @ the JCC
(ages birth -
5 years)
45 minutes. 9 session program.
Music Together is an internationally recognized early
childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers,
kindergarteners, and adults who love them. The classes are
based on the recognition that all children are musical. All
children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and
participate with confidence in the music of our culture,
provided that their early environment supports such
learning. Book and CD included in the price of the class.
Free demonstration classes will be held the week prior to
program start.

Community
Bridge Music Program
60 minutes weekly. 15 weeks
Ensembles provide a forum for musical expression, problem
solving, teamwork and socialization. Be a member of a small
group, learn new music, and meet fellow musicians from
across the island. Build confidence and self esteem.
Ensembles will meet weekly and are FREE OF CHARGE.

Chamber
Music
Group - Adult Chamber Music Group
Take
the next step and expand your repertoire while playing in an
intimate group. Advance your skills to include balance,
phrasing and intonation. Chamber music offers players the
perfect balance between solo and orchestral performing. Open
to all levels, however you must be able to read music. New
groups will be formed as needed. All groups led by Tamara
Keshecki, artistic director of Musical Chairs Chamber
Ensemble.
15 week sessions, 90 minutes each.

Appreciation
60 minutes
weekly. 5 weeks
Learn more about the music you love in this weekly music
appreciation class. You will learn about music's structure,
such as phrasing and harmony, as well as its social and
historical background by studying the works of the great
composers of the western musical tradition including Bach,
Beethoven, Mozart, Bartok and many more. Open to adults of
all ages. Dates/Times/Place TBD.

The Adult
Choir of the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute performs
traditional and contemporary music from Russia, Israel, and
other European countries. Participants perform with fellow
musicians from across Staten Island. A former faculty member
of the Belz School of Jewish Music, affiliated with Yeshiva
University, Neil Giniger conducted the Lincoln Square
Synagogue Chorus for over ten years. He is Founder and
Director of the Cantorial Council of America Chorus. The
choir is free and open to all Staten Island community
members.
