Caregiver Services

Our Caregiver Support Center offers services and support to individuals who are providing care to a loved one with dementia.


Do you feel:
  • Worried to leave your loved one home alone?
  • Upset that you have to witness a decline?
  • Guilty that you aren’t doing enough?
  • Angry to answer the same question over and over again?
  • Resentful that you had to stop your life to provide unappreciated care?
  • Nervous about your loved one’s health?
  • Powerless that this is happening to your loved one?
  • Unprepared to physically handle your loved one?
  • Annoyed that your relationship has been compromised?
  • Anxious for next steps?

Our free services for Caregivers include:

  • Comprehensive consultation to review your specific situation
  • Emotional Support
  • “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” Information and Training
  • Referrals for a wide range of community resources
  • Support Groups
  • Quality joint programs for you and your loved one
  • Meditation, Yoga, and Stretching
  • Assistance coordinating long term care and gathering documentation
  • Coordination of home health aide assistance (limited)
  • Incontinence & Nutritional Supplies (limited)
  • Linkage to benefits & entitlements, including SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid

All services are available in locations throughout Staten Island (both South and North Shore).

“Mingle & Socialize” Senior Adult Singles

The JCC provides vital services to every constituency on our Island with the goal of making it a better place for everyone.

Mingle & Socialize” is a UJA-Federation of New York-funded program to address isolation among the senior adult population. The JCC collaborates with local community Rabbis to provide clients with individual counseling and socialization groups, including monthly information sessions, walking club, trip club and theater group. (Watch for monthly dates and topics!) Support groups run in 6-week sessions and target the needs of our participants; past support groups include Bereavement for Widows/Widowers, Beating the Blues, Managing Stress, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Bereavement for Caregivers.

Limited short-term counseling is available.
This program has been designed to aid with:

  • Health and Wellness
  • Life’s Transitions
  • Short-term Counseling
  • Legal, Financial & Career Resources
  • Community Events and Synagogue Workshops

  Transportation


Free door-to-door transportation is available to/from the Joan & Alan Bernikow JCC for adults 60+ or disabled participants to attend programs at the JCC during designated Center for Life Long Development (CLLD) hours and to/from the Avis/South Shore JCC during designated Neighborhood Senior Center hours of operation. Free CLLD and/or Neighborhood Senior Center enrollment is required to take advantage of the transportation option. Our bus is lift accessible. Grandparents as Caregivers

Available for caregivers who are grandparents (age 55+), having full custody of minor grandchildren, age 18 or under. The program offers information, referrals, grandparent advocacy, support groups, workshops and education on parenting grandchildren. It offers limited quantities of supplemental supplies such as backpacks, formula, etc. In some cases a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) may be available at no cost on a temporary basis. Social Adult Group Respite Program

Our Social Adult Group Respite Program provides senior adults age 60+ who have been diagnosed with beginning to middle stage Alzheimer’s disease, related dementia, or traumatic brain injury (TBI) an opportunity to socialize and remain mentally and physically stimulated. While the senior adults participate in the program, the caregiver has an opportunity for respite and is free to run errands and tend to his/her routine activities. Services include nutritionally balanced lunch, fitness programs to improve circulation and strength, art and music therapy, pet therapy, reminisce and mind-wellness activities, onsite entertainment, and outside trips. Social Adult Day Services

The Social Adult Day Services is a program tailored specifically for senior adults age 60+ who have been diagnosed with beginning to middle stage Alzheimer’s disease, related dementia, or traumatic brain injury (TBI). The program provides individuals with an opportunity to socialize and remain mentally and physically stimulated through activities led by trained and caring staff.

Program hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10am – 3pm. Services include nutritionally balanced lunch, fitness programs to improve circulation and strength, art and music therapy, pet therapy, reminisce and mind-wellness activities, onsite entertainment, and outside trips. Free Home Safety Assessments

Funded by UJA-Federation of New York, the JCC provides free home safety assessments and handlebar installations through Richmond Senior Services to senior adults (age 60+) who meet the eligibility criteria.

Senior Adult Case Management

Case Management Services are available to Staten Island’s older homebound adult community, ages 60+.

If you reside in the Community Board 2 or 3 areas, the JCC can provide you with a Case Manager who will assess and evaluate eligibility for Home Delivered Meals, Home Care, Housekeeping, and a host of other benefitsand entitlements designed for older adults to age in place safely. Case Management provides individuals and families with a personal Case Manager who can help navigate the maze of services to develop strength–based individual care plans.
