New American Programs

All programs are provided at the Avis/South Shore JCC unless otherwise indicated. The purpose of this program is to offer educational and acculturation activities for seniors from the former Soviet Union. Russian-speaking staff provides support and assistance to help seniors with limited or no English to participate in Senior Adult Department programs. In addition, a number of programs specially designed for this group are available:

• English as a Second Language classes for all levels
• Citizenship
• Russian Club
• Movie Club
• Computer Class
• Literacy Club
• Chess Club tied to a tournament connected with the Staten Island Senior Olympics.
• Discussion Groups
• Cultural Programs
• Exercise, art, dance, yoga, choral group, poetry classes and other recreational programs are held at the South Shore, the North Shore, and St. Elizabeth’s Manor together with American-born seniors.
• Trips to cultural sites
